Apprenticeships are one of the oldest forms of skills learning in all of human history. They’ve been common practice for a wide range of professions since the birth of civilisation, and it is only really fairly recently that the practice has been somewhat overtaken by modern-day higher education. Even so, an apprenticeship can give you the practical experiences you’ll need to succeed in a specific career in ways that a modern day education often fails people.
Apprenticeships true value comes from how you spend your period as an apprentice living and breathing in the environment that you will eventually find your own. This stands in contrast to a university degree, where you get a broader but less relevant education. The downside to them is
The downside to them is that they can also leave you with fewer options if you decide to move away into a slightly different career path, as the subject you’ve studied is geared precisely towards a specific skill-set and career.
Apprenticeships also have, in most cases, lower barriers to entry. They are able to do this because an apprenticeship isn’t designed to cost the business/individual any money. Over your time as an apprenticeship, a large portion of your time will be spent as what amounts to a low-paid assistant. On top of a relatively low pay, you are provided with training in the profession, so that at some point, after a few years, you are able to gain a qualification to carry out the job. Because of how this works, the loss a business experiences when somebody drops out of an apprenticeship is far lower than what it costs a school to provide a place for an education only to have somebody drop out.
Nursing is a fast growing field to work in, particularly in elderly care nursing. This is likely to continue for some time yet, as we’re in the midst of an ageing population, where a larger portion of our total population consists of the elderly than at any other point in our history. The only way we seem able to deal with this is to hire nursing staff to care for them, and therefore the employment opportunities as a nurse are very high.
Elderly care is a significant industry, but calling it a single industry can create misconceptions about what types of opportunities are available for you to take on. For instance, many people expect an individual working in elderly care to be in care homes throughout most of their careers. While this is true for many, a lot of elderly care takes place in the individuals home, with the carer coming by for short periods of the day to make sure that they’re healthy and comfortable.
Even if you do wind up working in an elderly care home, it is worth bearing in mind that they aren’t all the same either. You can gain employment in a fairly standard elderly care home, or one which specialises in more serious cases of Alzheimer’s and forms of dementia. These care homes can consist of what are essentially shared living quarters, or they can be quasi-medical facilities that are able to fulfil the medical necessities of their inhabitants.
You also have the option to join the more expensive, privately funded care facilities. In these establishments, the resources available to the staff and the elderly are usually of a better standard, which generally makes for a better working environment.
The public sector is a very important concept to learn the meaning of, as it is used all of the time in public discourse. A lot of people mistake it for meaning purely government employment, but, more accurately, it represents the total part of the economy that is dependent upon government spending. This is an important distinction to make, as a lot of the spending that the government makes is made to private businesses, and without taking a view of how government spends it
This is an important distinction to make, as a lot of the spending that the government makes is made to private businesses. Without taking a view towards the totality of government spending, you won’t get a true representation of how much of our economy is dependent upon government spending and investment.
Another important thing to consider is that looking at where the public sector is spending its money can give somebody on the market for a job a good idea of where to apply for work. Almost always, the public sector offers much higher job security than virtually any other employment opportunity, which means that the value of a public sector jobs is very high for those interested in a long-term career.
Teaching is a difficult but rewarding job. It has become increasingly difficult over the last few years, as the government overhaul has a lot of demands for teachers to adapt to. It is actually quite a bit easier for newer teachers than older ones, as they don’t need to unlearn anything in order to fulfil the demands of their job.
Teaching is quite a well-paid profession, with a significant bump up from what the yearly average is for the whole of the UK, and a slightly larger average income than the average for university graduates. It does require a lot of work though; with a self-reported survey recently indicating that teachers spend on average 50 hours a week working.
The flip-side to this is that you do get significant holiday periods spread throughout the year, with six weeks over the summer period.
Besides the fairly high-income teaching promises, there is also a relatively high level of job security; generally far higher than other professions, even when compared to other public sector jobs.
While not a necessity for the job, being passionate about teaching can also bring a lot of its own rewards. Being able to foster the minds of the next generation can be a very rewarding experience, as you see them grow up and develop their skills.
